A great tool for the gardener who wants to keep their tree structure in check, Tree Loppers are designed to trim thick branches and twigs. They’re much larger than pruning shears or pole pruners and are used to cut above ground level so you don’t need a ladder for those hard-to-reach branches. They’re also designed to be stronger and more durable than other cutting tools to withstand a greater amount of force for longer periods of time.
We’ve reviewed dozens of loppers to find the best ones for the job, taking into consideration their durability, how easily they can be used and cleaned, and how well they make clean cuts. We’ve also looked at how easy it is to open and close them, how comfortable they are to hold and if they have built in shock absorbers for less strain on arms and hands.
There are many reasons for trimming a tree including removing dead branches or twigs, thinning the canopy to promote healthy growth and remove overgrowth, removing crossing or overgrown branches, and shaping trees for aesthetic purposes. However, the key difference between Tree Lopping and Tree Pruning is that Tree Lopping often results in indiscriminately cutting branches to stubs or removing too much of the foliage which can actually starve a tree.
Felco’s Xtreme loppers are made from high-quality materials and were a standout performer in our test. They’re heavy-duty anvil loppers with a ratchet design that multiplies leverage for up to 2x more power for each cut, helping reduce the amount of strain you need to exert when using them. The blades are coated in Teflon which helps reduce the buildup of sap and grunge and prevents rust.
These Felco loppers have an elegant, traditional design with forged carbon steel blades and sustainably sourced ash handles that are sturdy and comfortable to hold. They’re easy to open and close with a smooth and controlled movement and can cut branches up to 25mm in diameter. They’re lightweight and compact making them a good choice for those who want to take their loppers on the go or with limited storage space but they don’t have any built in shock absorbers or bumpers so aren’t quite as comfortable to use on softer woods such as green sycamore. They also don’t come with spare blades but do have a generous 10 year warranty.
Although these Felco loppers are the lightest of all the bypass loppers we tested at 450g they’re still very strong and can handle branches up to 2.5cm in diameter. The curved, large drop forged carbon steel blades are sharp and make quick work of hefty twigs and stems. The handles are also made from a durable, nonslip material and have an inward-angled grip to help reduce hand fatigue. The light weight and angled handles also make them the ideal loppers to tackle fruit trees, bamboo or for overhead pruning.
